Inside Nowa Huta – We’re Preparing a New Polish Paddy Private Tour in Krakow

Nowa Huta is one of the most fascinating and unusual parts of Krakow – and soon you’ll be able to discover it with Polish Paddy.

This week, we visited one of the most remarkable places in the district: the Administrative Centre of the former Lenin Steelworks in Nowa Huta. We weren’t there just as visitors. We came to learn, explore and prepare for the next step in the development of Polish Paddy Private Tours & Transfers.

Our plan is simple: we want to add private Nowa Huta tours to our experiences in Krakow.

And after seeing what is hidden inside these buildings, we are convinced that this is a side of Krakow that more international visitors should discover.

A completely different side of Krakow

When most people think about Krakow, they picture the Main Market Square, Wawel Castle, Kazimierz and the narrow streets of the Old Town.

But travel only a few kilometres east and you enter a completely different world.

Nowa Huta was developed from 1949 alongside a huge metallurgical complex and became one of the flagship urban projects of post-war communist Poland. Its monumental avenues, residential blocks and public buildings were intended to create a new type of socialist city. Kraków

Today, this makes Nowa Huta one of the most interesting places in Krakow for travellers interested in Polish history, communist-era Poland, architecture and everyday life during the PRL period.

And one of its most extraordinary landmarks stands at the entrance to the former steelworks.

Inside the Administrative Centre of the Nowa Huta Steelworks

The twin administrative buildings, known as Building Z and Building S, were constructed between 1952 and 1956 and designed by Marta and Janusz Ingarden together with Janusz Ballenstedt.

They are sometimes nicknamed the “Palaces of the Doges” or the “Vaticans” of Nowa Huta.

And when you stand in front of them, it is easy to understand why.

This wasn't designed to look like an ordinary factory office.

The architecture was supposed to impress.

The monumental façades, Renaissance-inspired details and carefully designed interiors made the Administrative Centre one of the most significant examples of Socialist Realist architecture in Poland. Kraków

Inside, much of the original character has survived.

Furniture.
Wood-panelled offices.
Meeting rooms.
Chandeliers.
Long corridors.
Original details from the 1950s.

The interiors were designed by a team led by Marian Sigmund, and surviving furnishings help visitors understand not only how these buildings looked, but also how the management of one of communist Poland's largest industrial projects operated. Kraków

Walking through these rooms feels very different from visiting a traditional museum.

You are entering the actual spaces where people worked and decisions concerning the steelworks were made.

The room where time seems to have stopped

One of the things that impressed us most was the atmosphere of the interiors.

A large wooden conference table surrounded by old chairs, wood-panelled walls, original lighting and the Polish emblem hanging above the room create the feeling that someone could walk through the door and begin a meeting at any moment.

Even the furniture tells part of the story.

These aren't modern reconstructions created to make a tourist attraction look historic. Elements of the original interiors and specially designed furnishings have survived inside the complex. czasopisma.vistulana.pl

And that's exactly the kind of place we want to show our guests.

Not only the famous postcard locations.

We want to show you places that help explain Poland.

And yes… there's more underground

There is another fascinating part of the complex.

Beneath Building S is a Cold War-era shelter with a preserved command post, intended for use in the event of war. Kraków

This adds another layer to the story of Nowa Huta.

Above ground you see monumental Socialist Realist architecture designed to project confidence and power.

Underground you discover preparations for a completely different reality – the possibility of military conflict.

That contrast makes this part of Nowa Huta particularly interesting.

Even the old bus belongs here

And then there are details that simply make Nowa Huta feel like Nowa Huta.

During our visit we came across a classic Jelcz bus, the kind of vehicle strongly associated with Polish public transport of previous decades.

For international visitors, something like an old Polish bus may simply look interesting.

For many Poles, however, objects like this immediately bring back memories of another era.

This is why we don't want our future Nowa Huta private tour to be just about architecture.

We want to connect the buildings, streets, industrial history and everyday life into one story.

Why did Polish Paddy come here?

Because Polish Paddy is growing.

Gregory and Peter – Polish Paddy & Polish Buddy – want our tours to go beyond the standard tourist routes.

Of course, Krakow's Old Town, Wawel and Kazimierz are extraordinary places.

But Krakow doesn't end there.

We believe that travellers who spend a little more time in the city should also have the opportunity to discover places such as Nowa Huta and the former steelworks district.

That's why we came here ourselves: to explore the site, understand its history better and start preparing a new experience for our guests.

And we can now tell you:

A Polish Paddy Private Tour of Nowa Huta is coming soon. 🇵🇱

We want to create an experience particularly suited to visitors from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and other countries who want to understand what Poland was like behind the Iron Curtain and how those decades shaped modern Krakow.

Not just dates.

Not just architecture.

Real places. Real stories. Real Poland.

Discover the real Krakow with locals

At Polish Paddy Private Tours & Transfers, our idea has always been to show visitors more than the places everybody already knows.

Sometimes the most memorable experience happens when you leave the Main Market Square behind.

Nowa Huta is exactly that kind of place.

It tells a complicated story about Poland's post-war history, industrialisation, communist ideology, architecture and the people who lived and worked here.

And soon, we'll take you there.

Stay tuned – our new Private Nowa Huta Tour from Krakow is coming soon.
